COP28 recognizes Calgary as emerging cleantech powerhouse.
A leading research firm has named Calgary – Ionic Solutions’ home and base – as a city on the rise in the cleantech industry. The announcement was made at COP28 in Dubai, attended by policymakers, advocates and researchers who decide on policies to limit global temperature rises and adapt to climate change.
Cleantech (clean technology) supports companies and individuals to improve environmental sustainability and reduce emissions through renewables, carbon capture (CCUS), bio-based plastics and other green technologies such as water technology, like ours.
The report recognizes Calgary as an important and growing hub for startups and emerging innovations in this sector. Calgary was also granted a spot in the Global Cleantech Top 35 ranking – a first for the city.
A community we’re proud to be a part of
Ionic Solutions was founded in 2009 and, as such, we consider ourselves to be pioneers in Calgary’s cleantech community. Our mission has always been to support businesses and industries to reduce water consumption, increase wastewater regeneration and generate fewer emissions while doing it.
Today, we’re proud to be a part of a growing community in Calgary which is passionate about creating technologies that reduce our environmental impact and safeguard our planet’s resources for generations to come.
Alberta is currently home to close to 1,000 cleantech companies, more than 600 are headquartered in Calgary, and collectively they employ nearly 15,000 people. Additionally, more than 130,000 Albertans work — directly and indirectly — in the broader cleantech industry.
We believe Calgary has the expertise, capacity and ambition to become a global leader in clean technology and we are excited to be a part of that movement.
An environment for cleantech to thrive
Why? Calgary’s competitive edge is, in part, due to low provincial sales and corporate income taxes. These advantages serve to position the whole province of Alberta as an affordable place to establish businesses, especially compared to Vancouver and Toronto. According to 2022 LinkedIn Talent Insights, Calgary also has access to the fastest-growing tech workforce in North America.
“This technology is important because we’re working to phase out emissions; we are not phasing out energy production,” said Alberta Premier Danielle Smith, speaking about Alberta’s energy future at COP28. “In fact, all reasonable forecasts show that Alberta is set to remain a leader in energy production and carbon-capture utilization and storage for decades.”
Calgary’s cleantech ecosystem is currently valued at $5.2 billion.
Powerful cleantech partnerships
Ionic Solutions is proud to partner with other Calgary and Alberta-based pioneers in cleantech and we are always open to conversations with startups and innovators. Together, we can ensure that, as we transition to a carbon-free future, we safeguard our planet and its resources.
