Desalinating boiler feed water in one of Western Canada's largest thermal power stations

In October 2024, Ionic Solutions’ groundbreaking Capacitive Electrodialysis Reversal (C-EDR) technology is being piloted within a large power station in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
Using a small electric current and ion-selective membranes, Ionic Solutions’ C-EDR technology is removing dissolved minerals from boiler feed water, drawn from the South Saskatchewan River.
The pilot is demonstrating C-EDR as an effective replacement for an ageing lime softening system, which uses substantial chemical inputs and produces a large volume of sludge for disposal. At the same time, C-EDR lessens the work of the plant’s demineralization system and significantly reduced the cleaning chemicals and rinse water it requires.
