Desalinating reverse osmosis reject water for the world's largest steam energy delivery system
Between November 2024 and November 2025, Ionic Solutions’ groundbreaking Capacitive Electrodialysis Reversal (C-EDR) technology is being piloted within Con-Edison’s steam operating system New York City.
The pilot demonstrates C-EDR as a powerful bolt-on improvement to reverse osmosis by removing dissolved minerals (salt) from millions of gallons of reverse osmosis reject water, using a small electric current and ion-selective membranes.
By recycling between 80% and 90% of the reverse osmosis wastewater stream, almost 15% less water is drawn from surrounding water systems – meaning more water is available to the people of New York.
LESS ENERGY + FEWER CHEMICALS + MORE AVAILABLE WATER = 78% LESS OPEX FOR OUR CLIENTS
