Barry Johnson
Co-founder and President

A professional engineer with more than 30 years of experience in the oil and gas industry, Barry is a driven entrepreneur with a proven track record in leading and growing businesses within the energy sector.

Prior to the formation of Ionic Solutions, Barry was the President and CEO of Bunker Energy Ltd., Vice President of Engineering for Avalanche Energy Ltd., and Executive Vice President of Colony Energy Ltd.

Azar Yazdanbod
Co-founder, Vice President Research

Azar Yazdanbod is the chief innovator of Ionic Solutions’ patented technology, C-EDR.

Azar has 30 years of engineering experience in earth sciences, physics, fluid flow analysis, dynamic analysis, water engineering and has been involved in managing many complex projects.

Azar started his personal research into technology for desalinating sea water 25 years ago. Since then, in addition to his extensive review of technical literature and theoretical studies, Azar has dedicated himself to analytical research and conducted hundreds of tests to determine an intricate knowledge of the behavior of ions in electric fields.

He has a Master of Science degree in Civil Engineering, specializing in Geotechnical Engineering, from the University of Houston, Texas.

Jordan Grose

Executive Vice President

Jordan Grose is an entrepreneurial business leader who is passionate about increasing people’s access to clean drinking water through technology.

With over 20 years industry experience in commercialization of new technologies, engineering consulting, and business, Jordan brings his entrepreneurial leadership skills to Ionic Solutions.

Jordan specializes in relentless customer focus, strategic planning, product commercialization, building high performance teams, problem solving, and having fun doing it.

He holds a BSc in Mechanical Engineering, a Masters of Business Administration from the University of Calgary, and is a member of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta.

Kevin Slough
Vice President Operations

Kevin Slough brings more than 25 years of operational and design experience from the water treatment industry to Ionic Solutions.

Kevin was the founder and CEO of Calgary based water treatment company FilterBoxx Water and Environmental Corp. which was three times recognized as one of the 100 Fastest Growing Companies in Canada by Profit Magazine and three times recognized by the Cleantech Group as one of the Cleantech 100 companies. Filterboxx was acquired by Ovivo in 2018.

Marjorie Knight
Vice President Finance
Marjorie is a versatile finance executive with 20+ years’ experience in both small local and large multinational organizations. Her background gives her a strong foundation in best practice internal controls and procedures, along with an understanding of the challenges faced by small companies in implementing them.
With her creative problem-solving focus, she provides leadership and solutions to enable dynamic decisions with effective corporate governance, whatever the size of the business.

Marjorie’s finance experience has included internal and external audit, system implementation, multi-company multi-currency consolidations, international taxation, mergers and acquisitions, foreign currency hedging, and full cycle accounting and financial statement preparation. At various times she has also supported HR through benefits design and administration, and international payroll.

Marjorie firmly believes that people are the most important part of any business. Throughout her career she has promoted the well-being of employees, whether through the development of compensation and benefits, her commitment to a safety culture or by serving on the social committee. She is a vocal advocate for reducing the stigma around mental health, and openly shares her experience with anxiety and depression.

She is passionate about sustainability and conservation. Her current role with Ionic Solutions lets her pair that passion with her skill set to help bring innovative, sustainable desalination solutions to communities and industry.

Darcy Davis

Lead Product Engineer

Darcy has 20 years of experience as a product-focused mechanical engineering leader. Prior to Ionic Solutions, Darcy spent 17 years in a leadership role at electronics manufacturing giant Garmin, where he implemented innovative mechanical designs into some of the most successful mass-produced consumer products in the world.  

He leads the Ionic Solutions’ product engineering team with an in-depth knowledge of design, product development, process, prototyping, production, quality control, troubleshooting, and an uncompromising focus on creating the best C-EDR desalination systems for our clients.

Matt Beer

Lead Manufacturing Engineer

Matt has 25 years of experience in manufacturing to commercialize some of the world’s most useful products. He has spent many years in management positions, including Head of Engineering at TENET Medical, which included the creation of their world-class manufacturing facilities and product lines.
 
He brings a wealth of experience in custom machine design, automation, equipment integration, and process development to ensure our C-EDR systems are manufactured to the highest possibly standard, every time.

Dr. Nicholas Randell

Research Scientist

Nick attained his BSc at Memorial University of Newfoundland in 2012, working in the fields of coordination chemistry and magnetochemistry. He completed his PhD in 2017 at the University of Saskatchewan, studying semiconducting polymers for use in organic solar cells. Between 2018 and 2022, he worked as a postdoctoral fellow in Grenoble and Calgary. 

Nick’s work has focused heavily on exploring scientific breakthroughs with the potential to impact climate change and environmental challenges. He brings this experience and lens to our research team as he explores the capabilities and potential of C-EDR technology in treating complex waters and solving water scarcity.  

Dr. Zahra Abooali Zadeh

Research Scientist

Zahra has two Masters degrees in physics and a PhD in Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering with a focus on Nanomaterials from the University of Calgary. 

Zahra’s work as a material researcher have led her to develop several new materials for functionality, performance, and sustainability within the manufacturing world.  

Her focus at Ionic Solutions is the continued development of our super-capacitive electrodes for higher energy storage and operational excellence.

Fletcher Dahlman

Manufacturing and Design Engineer

Fletcher is a P.Eng of Mechanical Engineering with 7 years of experience in machine dynamics, field testing, robotics, solution design, and fabrication.

Fletcher is primarily focussed on the scale-up of Ionic’s manufacturing and production processes to ensure we continue to meet client demand as our company grows. He also provides field support, ensuring commissioned C-EDR systems run smoothly on site.  

Alex Kruger

EIT, Product Engineer in Training

Recent graduate Alex has a BSc Mechanical Engineering with Minor in Mechatronics and an MEng with a Specialization In Software.

He brings his skills in electrical, mechanical and software engineering to product design, 3D modelling, the design of novel components, prototyping and testing.   

Miranda Milligan

Lead Shop Technician

Miranda has extensive experience in processes and logistics which allows her to lead our shop team in the build of our C-EDR cells, from assembly to testing.

With strict adherence to safety and training, Miranda ensures client ordered systems are built on time and to specification.

Bill Hanna

Senior Shop facilitator 

Bill brings 35 years of experience as a CP Rail Car Mechanic to the Ionic Solutions’ shop and manufacturing teams.

A skilled mechanic and technician, Bill leads on inspections and testing to ensure our C-EDR cells meet the highest standards in performance and safety.

Dan Huras
Dan is a CPA with extensive experience in management, finance, projects and business development. After successful roles with Deloitte Touche, Imperial Oil, TC Energy and Mancal Corporation, Dan gravitated towards smaller early-stage companies where he could enjoy the challenge of launching new products and ideas to the market. This interest began when he formed Sapphire Water Technologies, a new entity within the Mancal group which focused on water treatment. His most recent role was CEO of ClearBakk Water Solutions, a water and wastewater treatment company. Under his leadership the company grew from a start up with a handful of employees to a company with 50 staff. ClearBakk successfully designed, built and installed the largest polymer hydration system in the world. He has sat on several boards in his career. In addition to his CPA, Dan holds a Bachelor of Mathematics from the University of Waterloo and completed a Business Acumen program at the University of Michigan.

Michael Koury

Michael is a respected and accomplished leader with demonstrated success creating and executing business plans within early-stage companies and multinational organizations. He has more than 30 years of experience in the Information Technology industry. After a successful 20-year career with IBM Canada, Michael participated in a number of private ventures with his most recent role as President & CEO of Pivot Data Centres, acquired by Rogers Communications in 2014. Michael has a reputation for strategic thinking and creative vision, with an ability to support both through sound execution and team buy-in. Since 2015, Michael has performed an advisory role to multiple early-stage technology companies and currently sits as Board Chair with Veerum Inc. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce, Honors from the University of Alberta.

Russ Barss
Russ has proven leadership experience with both small businesses and large global enterprises. He was co-owner, director and held executive roles with two technology-based companies, achieving significant growth and shareholder value creation. As an entrepreneur, Russ is recognized as having strategic and business planning skills, building a high-performance organization, R & D, product development and marketing. Both small companies were sold to large, global enterprises, where Russ was retained and promoted to broader leadership roles. In this “big company” environment, Russ developed skills in leadership development, quality management processes, integrated marketing, operations, and systems.

Russ holds a BSc honours in Mechanical Engineering from Queens University, and an MBA with distinction from KU Leuven in Belgium.
